As a cycling instructor, I teach people not to ride in the dooring zone (the area next to parked cars). It is a dangerous place to ride a bicycle. Guess where a good portion of the bike lanes on W. Main Street and other streets in Charlottesville are?
This weekend, a man was riding in the bike lane, struck by a woman open her door, and then bounced under a truck. This scenario is perfectly set up on the main cycling corridor of Charlottesville

Safe Cycling Charlottesville 
I very nearly ran into a car door on JPA extended last summer. They must have been sitting in the car with the engine off for at least a minute or two because I did not see them park as I approached from the Beach Club. I’m always on high alert for car doors on West Main, but you don’t really expect them on most streets. I’m very wary of riding on West Main for this reason, so I hope some improvements are made there.
